Today started off with a big drive up the No 6 Motorway, from Beer-Sheeva past Jerusalem to where we left it to go to Caesarea on the coast. This city was built by Herod the Great and named for his best friend Caesar Augustus. It had a harbour, lighthouse, theatre and hippodrome.
Just up the beach a short drive is the end of a 18km aqueduct which brought water to the city.
We drove up to Haifa, and up its big hill where the rich people live to overlook a beautiful garden made by the Ba'hai people, then went further to a Carmelite monastery with a great view over the Jezreel Valley.
We ate whatever we had for lunch as we drove along to Megiddo, another mound of successive settlements dating back to about 6000 BC. Their water tunnel went down 187 steps and came up 80 back to the outside world.
We got a bit lost as we drove into Acco (mediaeval Acre), but finally made it to climb on the C19 reconstruction of the crusader wall, and look at the old city, then it was off to our hotel. We had wanted to go for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea, but by then the sun had set and there was a cool breeze. Since there has been a cold doing the rounds of the bus, we decided that a paddle would have to do, and then we came back for dinner.
